Minutes: January 19th minutes, sent out by email, were approved as sent by Michael.
Treasurer’s Report: Jan reported Checkbook Balance for months of January is $2,504.65; CD $1,200.57; total assets $3,705.22.
Jan read a Thank You card from Grace Howard, President of Hamilton Gardens at Lake Chatuge, Inc., thanking TCHA for the recent donation of $500 ($300 from Treasury, $200 from two members).
Donation: Noel made a motion to give Hiwassee River Watershed Coalition a donation of $500; seconded and passed.
New Name: Noel also stated we would put a third amendment to our By-Laws for the new name, Towns County Civic Association, Inc. He and Joan went to UCB and signed necessary papers and Jan will contact State re: name change.
Website: Jan made a motion to change the name on the website using the spelled out version, Towns County Civic Association .com & tccivic.com email; seconded and passed. The abbreviation TCCA is already taken.
Rack cards: Everyone checked corrections to new rack cards and they will be ordered from Busy Bee.
Membership: LaJean was sick so Noel reported that we now have 190 members.
City of Hiawassee: Noel & Joan attended both meetings. At Jan. 29th Work Session Patsy Owens was sworn in as Council Member and Bonnie Kendrick was sworn in as City Clerk, both by Atty. Thomas Mitchell. Mayor announced City had a $30K grant for City Planning w/public meetings on plans. Motel-Hotel Tax—City will keep 60% and give Chamber 40% for advertising instead of Chamber getting the whole amount. New Franchise Fee Ordinance-1st reading with a cap for EMC. Liz talked to EMC, hospital, Ingles & other businesses about the real amount this will add to bills, not as much as first thought. City will be paying EMC for new lighting in dark areas of City limits. City renewed Air Med contract w/Erlanger Life Force 6 in Murphy, Tony Garner, Rep. Cost: $4900/yr. They made 11 flights here in 2017. The Waste Water Plant, built in ‘60’s will be upgraded to ½ mgd for $600K grant, which will include an automatic screen for debris (now done by employee).
City of Y.H.: No one attended. The T.C. Herald stated that the 1978 charter has been redone and submitted to the Georgia General Assembly to be approved.
Commissioner: Last week’s regular meeting canceled due to ice (storm didn’t happen); next mtg. on Feb. 13th @5:30 at Courthouse.
TCW&S Auth.: Will be next Monday.
Chamber: Annual mtg. had 120 attending. Chas. Burton said the BVR golf course is rated as 21 in nation. The Chamber has a committee to decide where to put the $6K webcam. Tourism report lists $48.78 million in tourists spending in Towns, $26.45 mill. in Union and $54+ in Rabun. 21 concerts in 2018 at Fairgrounds plus 3 big events so far: Outdoor Expo -April; Made in GA-June; Bass Tournament-Sept.
CVB: CASA request for $600 approved. Hamilton Gardens request for $1500/mo. ongoing was not approved, but $1K/mo. approved to be reassessed in May, tools purchase $1K approved. GMF advertising support $4888/mo. continual; Chamber advertising support $2833/mo. continual. Noel will go to an Economic Development Seminar in Gainesville on 2/27.
EMC Board mtg.: Michael reported 3 policy changes: Director compensation cap of $450/Director/ea. regular meeting plus $200/diem when necessary; Purchase of vehicles requires 3 sealed bids; Service practice Standards defined, in conformance with TVA rules. Town Hall mtg. in April w/Board nominations. Provide Generlink device for home generator safety.
